Does the ghosting (common on most low-mid level lcd phones) affect the image? The pixel alignment on the 2000 one is amazing tho, and I'm not so sure about assuming 'less vibrant = worse', the 2000 one sems to have a far greater range and balancing (it's not greenish out of the box). But for a diy it's waaaaay more affordable than any commercial solution.

He mentioned options that he felt were less than optimum to increase the brightness, but didn't mention what he WOULD do if he wanted to be able to see it in daylight. I'd be very interested to learn that because requiring a perfectly dark room is less than ideal.

Only problem i can see and it would bother me is the light seems to be more focused into the centre of the image which is making dim areas on the edges of the screen but in terms of clarity and colors its great

Ahoy! let me say WOW! I am gonna build this!! (threaded rod FTW!) rewind 20 years, tried mounting a fresnel lens directly in front of a CRT monitor, mechanical lego parts for the focuser.... set gamma to MAX and hold on tight!!! upgraded later that year to a free overhead projector with an 800x600 Sharp panel made for that purpose, maybe 100USD on ebay (right when ebay started!) big improvement! fast forward to now!... this thing!!! wow! I already have a bunch of what Id need. heatsinks, lenses, aluminum sheet, varying lengths of wire, threaded rod, check check check check check But maybe you dont have these things??? let me help ---heatsink... search ebay (search for obsolete ones from the intel socket 775 era... probably 5$ usd) ---aluminum... Old signage, find a thick one... craigslist-free, or equivalent, that old faded 'yard of the month' sign just found a new home! (wood could be substituted for most ALU parts (barring the LED heatsink assembly, fire safety here) ---wire... extension cord, or take apart a dead tool (vacuum cleaner?) clip, strip, masking tape label + and - ---lens... ebay, old film camera stuff cheap... vivitar comes to mind ---led... I know a fancy one will help with color accuracy buy I was thinking maybe a cheap Automotive LED headlight might work! powered by a 12v SMPS power brick like for a dead Xbox or data server. ---4K panel... can't really help you here... I think if u want 4k ur gonna have to bite the bullet... there are a million cheap 'cloud locked' apple phones with good screens... the hdmi decoder board... bullet... chomp... u get the idea ---primary surface mirror... maybe just aim the darned thing right at the screen! (less problem with heat rising to the LCD for horizontal orientation)... or... big old projection tvs will have lenses, a primary surface mirror, and a free bonus HUGE FRESNEL LENS! mind the capacitors and if its CRT based, dispose of any leaded glass at a haz-mat center. anyway that sums up my efforts to amend this presentation with a healthy dose of... 'you can build this thing practically for free with a bit of healthy adventurous scrounging' I am no Barbarian, quite the opposite!! I strongly believe that as we move towards a world where people make their own things we need to be ready to make them out of.... well... mainly old junk!!! its not so glamorous, your hands and feet will become dirty in the process... but the baby turtles will thank you... upcycle upcycle upcycle... study study study... repeat (its not the destination, its the journey.... good journey my friends!) Cheers!! and seriously my man! this thing rocks the house! kudos on the design, decided to knuckle down and hammer out a solid Comment for you! Im Gonna build it!!! *donates 1024x768 DVI projector back to thrift store, gives up on 'converting it to LED... someday...* feel free to forward this comment 'to whom it may concern' as you please! I tried to pour some magic into it! best wishes, happy life to all!

Good day Sir, This is brilliant! All we need are lenses to magnify the light, which is easier and requires smaller or less lenses with rotary focus (telescoping). How small can a projector be made?

A note as an actual projectionist is that when you use a reflector you actually unfocus the light source from the plane of the image source in order to get rid of the hotspot and even out the light across the full image.

Congrats for this amazing project! Actually does anyone can explain me one thing? Why do we need a large format lens (rather than 24x36 lens)? Also the converging fresnel is supposed to converge the rays of light to a "single point" the focal distance. Also if the distance between the lens and the fresnel is equal to the focal length of the fresnel, the light ray crossing the length is supposed to be very small no?

I have a project for you; I'd like to see someone place perfectly the same amount of 4K smartphones in arrangements of one per pixel; on a rack that each are directed towards accurately capturing exact video of it's designated pixel( it would be possible to mod this to a mega computer in form of separating the smartphone and maybe even just creating external cams and using those through software drivers and tethering linking....etc...) but the idea here would be to have the top smartphone's pixels' amount within each pixel of a screen. This one will surely take a while to top. Cheers buddy

I had a question, but could you use a brighter led if you use a ceramic tint heat shield in between ( like that is used on automotive glass) the lcd and the led. And basically separate the lcd and led so the ambiant heat won’t reach and the uv/heat radiation can’t pass to the lcd

When focusing the collimator lens, you say to get it down to its smallest possible dot. Would it not be better to get it to a dot the size of the LED? I know nothing about physics, so I'm assuming I'm just going to be corrected. Either way I learn something.

Using more powerful LEDS and water or forced air cooling on the display would allow for a much bigger or brighter screen, or more importantly allow the high dynamic range of the screen to be utilised, something this build isn't doing to its detriment.
