Your radiator is upside down, the inlet and outlet tubes should be at the bottom to minimize air pockets. Pump position is good though.

Thanks for uploading such informative video in detail and easily understandable manner. Can you show how much lux your artificial sunlight produce. Love from India.

Planning a move back to Oregon from Arizona early next year and this is going to save my ass for sure I moved partly to escape the never-ending gray skies! I may try to make a scaled down version that can be mounted in a wall, something like a sun-in-a-box hopefully about the size of a typical box fan. I promise if that comes to fruition I will make sure to get the details to you, you're such an inspiration as always!

For another option to get the tyndall effect you can try make a solution of Na2S2O3 and then add some drops of dilute HCl. The Sulfur wil drop out of solution as S8 wich are practically nanosized. When you do this in a long small tube on a bright light you'll see the tyndall effect quite nice for a while.

Hello! I don't know if you answer questions through here, but I figured it was worth a shot. I'm using your fake sunlight via broken TV tutorial to build a few false windows for my basement apartment. Would the soap and water diffuser work with those lights, or would they even be necessary with the diffusers it comes with? For that matter, I plan to use LED strips that allow you to adjust both brightness and how cool or warm the light is for that project to help avoid messing up my circadian rhythm as well as to match the outdoors. Would the soap diffuser make all the light blue, or would it just make the results more natural? Thanks a lot for your fantastic tutorials and your time!

He kept talking about using this light to improve people’s seasonal mood, and all I was thinking was to use it to conduct an experiment/torture in which you keep people underground and you fool them into thinking it’s daylight and alter their time perception by changing the intervals at which the light is turned on. Hehe I promise! I’m not a monster :p

I wonder, wouldn’t it also work to model smaller parabolic reflectors booleaned into squares or hexagons, 3D print them, cover them with mirror film, tile them together and give them each an LED at their individual focal points? If I’m doing the geometry right, the depth of each parabolic reflector and distance to its focal point could be as little as a third of their width. The problem from there would involve the edges between the tiles, making sure light from each LED doesn’t interact with other reflectors. Maybe dividers between tiles could be disguised to look like a lattice in the window. But I hope a seamless look could be achieved too. Which may also involve making the light coming from each LED hit the reflector evenly throughout its surface (light coming straight off the face of the LED into the middle of the reflector vs light being emitted closer to a 90° angle off it landing near the edges of each reflector), which may or may not be an issue. Another issue may be combating the self-interfering shadow of the LED strip itself and any of its apparatus, which didn’t seem to be an issue with your setup since your reflector is off-center. But a tilled array like that could be compact enough to fit along with the soap-water layer into a single “window”-like piece several to a few inches thick which can be hung on the wall or even put inside a real window, rather than a whole apparatus taking up space in another room. It’s a fun idea I hope to refine and try.

As a photographer, this is amazing. I’ve always struggled to replicate sunlight. I am lucky in the sense that I have access to an array of light modifiers and fresnels. My process worked okay but what I didn’t know I was missing was fricken soap! What soap did you use btw?!

I worked on a number of motion pictures, and this was a great illustration AND a new take on a setup we had. Our three actors have an extended scene which took a number of hours to shoot. The direction of the light wasn't a problem (lot's of trees) but the sun literally dropping down and taking every vestige of light with it was. Paul Elliott, the D. P. (DIrector of Photography), had planned for this by starting off the lighting with what it needed to finish. What he did was to beautifully light the setup using artificial lights to replace what the reality showed by the end of the scene. As the day progresses, we would essentially remove lights and grip equipment and the light never seemed to change. I've often used a gel (sheet colors or diffusion) called Hampshire Frost by Lee Electric for the window effect. It's a very light diffusion, looking like a lightly frosted window. It helps spread the light for that overall "daylight ambiance," but lets you see enough through it to get the effect of depth behind the window. You've made a terrific video and helped illustrate beautifully how the best lighting is in emulating reality.
